Poison

(words and music by Chris Stanley © 2013)

Verse 1:
Gm7
Your love is like a telephone that never seems to ring
Like that songbird on the roof that never seems to sing
          Cm7                                                                Gm7
And I wonder if you think of me when I’m not around

Verse 2:
Your heart is like the winter sun that hardly ever shows
So much colder when it’s shining, casting shadows on the snow
And I want to know you need me but all I have is doubt

Chorus 1:
            D7                                   Cm7                                         Gm7
You’re in my veins like poison, killing me from the inside out

Verse 3:
Your sadness is a prison cell from which I can’t be free
The door’s locked from the inside and I’ve thrown away the key
Yes I threw it in the river just to watch it sinking down
Verse 4:
Your love is like that songbird that never seems to sing
So I loaded up my shotgun
I’m gonna shoot it with affection—try to keep it on the ground
Chorus 2:
You’re in my veins like poison, killing me from the inside out

Middle:
            Eb
And it seems to me we’re looking
               F                                 Gm7
Through different ends of a telescope
             Eb
‘Cause I think you’re too far away
       F                    Eb
And you think -
       F                    Eb
And you think –
       F                                F7
And you think I’m too close

Instrumental (double bass riff followed by lead guitar):
Gm7 – Cm7 – Gm7 – D7 – Cm7…Gm7

Verse 5:
Gm7
Your eyes are like the enemy; your gaze is hardened steel
                                                                                   Cm7
And every time you look at me I wonder if I’m real
               D7                    Cm7                                   Gm7
Or am I just bad fiction, the kind you can’t put down

Chorus 3:
You’re poison in my veins
Like poison
Killing me from the inside out

Intro, v1 and v2  - keyboard (organ?) and vocals only

Verse 1:
C#m7
Empty house used to be so full of us
Empty house used to be enough
        F#m7                                      G#7
And I don’t like, I don’t like the wind blowing through the eaves

Verse 2:
Empty house, where we used to play our songs
Empty house, where it all went wrong
I don’t like, I don’t like the silence when you’re not with me

Chorus 1:
C#m7                                                                                                 F#m7                    G#7
When I play my guitar and you play on your piano we could find a song in anything
       C#m7
But now that you’re gone the world seems out of tune
                          F#m7                    G#7
Somehow the walls are closing in
        F#m7                                                                                              C#m7
And I am just an echo now singing back the words you used to sing
F#m7                                                                                     G#7
I am just an echo singing back the words you used to sing for me

Verse 3:
Empty sky - the colour of a broken heart
Empty sky - we sang until the stars went out
I don’t like, I don’t like the wind rushing through the trees

Chorus 2:
When I play my guitar and you play on your piano we could find a song in anything
But now that you’re gone the world seems out of tune
Somehow the walls are closing in
And I am just an echo now singing back the words that you sing
And I am just an echo singing back the words that you sing for me

Vocal interlude: A – C#m7 – A – G#7

Chorus 3:
When I play my guitar and you play on your piano we could find a song in anything
But now that you’re gone the world seems out of tune
Somehow the walls are closing in
C#m7                                                     F#m7                                         G#7
And I hear thunder rolling, rolling, I wonder what the storm will bring

And I am just an echo singing back the words you used to sing for me
